Surf film history, restored and streaming.
Nalu TV is home to nearly 200 classic surf, longboard, bodyboard and snowboard films, remastered from the original masters and presented by the filmmakers who shot them.
Rescuing the films that shaped surfing
For a generation of surfers, these films were the stoke: Wave Warriors on a worn-out VHS tape, a Bystrom film at the local surf shop, Searching for Tom Curren on repeat. Most were shot on 16mm and video, sold on cassette, then disappeared into closets and garages as the tapes wore out.
Nalu TV was started in 2022 by surf cinematographer Derek Hoffmann to keep his friends’ films from disappearing. We work directly with the filmmakers to find the best surviving masters, remaster them with care, and put them online where anyone, anywhere, can watch them again, from Pipeline in the 80s to the longboard revival and the bodyboard boom of the 90s.
Based in Hawaii and Southern California, we are a small team of surfers and filmmakers who believe this history deserves better than a dusty shelf.
nalu
(Hawaiian) — wave, surf. Also: to ponder, to reflect.
It felt like the right name for a place to watch great surfing and think about where it all came from.
