SURFER
Ask any surfer who came up in the nineties into the early aughts who their favorite pro is, and there’s a good chance their response will be: “Bruce Irons.” Hell, even groms today cite flicks like The Bruce Movie, Campaign II, Momentum: Under the Influence as inspiration for the aerial antics and tube-riding prowess of today. From Teahupo’o to Trestles to everything in between – particularly on the North Shore – Bruce was the guy. But now, is a potential comeback is on the horizon? Possibly.
In the latest episode of Nathan Fletcher’s video podcast, Live and Direct, Nate asks his old friend Bruce about his departure from the surfing spotlight and his subtle, yet very welcomed, return.
SURFER
It’s hard to think of two surfers who share more of an uniquely wild position, that of being younger brother to the most radical surfer on the planet, than Bruce Irons and Nathan Fletcher.
The two just released part one of their conversation on Live and Direct, Fletcher’s raw interview show with surfing greats. While this segment is only 17 minutes long, you can clearly see that Fletcher and Irons have a singular bond that goes back ages–long before they even knew each other. Irons has just recently re-emerged in surf media after taking some time for recovery and Fletcher facilitates the interview/conversation in a way that no one else could.
The Interia
Bruce Irons is an icon. He hasn’t had the easiest life, though, and in this installment of Nathan Fletcher’s vlog, Live and Direct, the two old friends caught up about a whole lot.
Both Nathan and Bruce are the younger brothers of surf legends. Andy Irons and Christian Fletcher cast very long shadows, but Nathan and Bruce have both managed to escape those shadows to cast their own. They also talked about how the paths they chose in life — paths of surf stardom — had both positive and negative effects.

“I was in debt at 22 years old, winning felt like life and death for me at the time,” says Kelly Slater, as he remembers not being able to pay for his two week tenancy at Mark Foos Hawaiian homestead.
The quote is pulled from a typically articulate Kelly memory, crystallized in the amber of a story dripping with nostalgia for surfing’s bygone era — and it’s just one of the many gems found in the third of Nate Fletcher’s four part interview with the GOAT.
The interview, done in the groundbreaking low-budget high-authenticity format of FaceTime + Greenscreen + Apple Voice Memo is a terrific display of Slades storytelling abilities, and lays the groundwork for what promises to be a continuation of engaging installments from Mr. Fletcher.

The only thing that rivals Mason Ho’s erratic creativity on a surfboard is his erratic creativity while spinning a yarn. Exhibit A: his strategy for optimizing enjoyment during surfing, which you can watch here.
The part of his brain responsible for turning thoughts to words seems to function with a natural lubricant, as if he’s constantly opening his eyes to a world completely different from the one a moment before.

Nate Fletcher has a new YouTube channel, and it’s off to a smouldering start. In the very first episode of the video podcast series, Live and Direct, Nate gets his old friend Kelly Slater on the hotline.
Throughout the video, Nate narrates against a backdrop of a Kelly Slater montage, giving us both oral and visual tributes to Kelly’s many magnificent lives.
The art direction is, somehow, completely disorientating and utterly charming. Nate’s bobbing head reminds us that Kelly Slater is all things. He is Hollywood, he can furiously strum an acoustic guitar whilst harmonising with Eddie Vedder, and he is the only person on earth to have landed a frontside double-spin.
THE INTERIA
Nathan Fletcher and Kelly Slater have known each other for a long, long time. They’re both of the same generation, but occupy very different sides of the surfing coin.
