Power from the Westside
Vincent “Sunny” Garcia was born on January 14, 1970, and grew up near Māʻili Point on Oahu’s Waianae Coast. He turned pro at 16, and at his first big pro contest, the 1986 Gotcha Pro at Sandy Beach, he beat two-time world champion Tom Carroll.
Known for his raw power on a wave, he won the Triple Crown of Surfing a record six times, in 1992, 1993, 1994, 1999, 2000 and 2004, and holds the record for Qualifying Series wins with 22. In 2000 he won the world title, and he was the second pro surfer to pass a million dollars in prize money.
The films on Nalu TV follow him from Herbie Fletcher’s Wave Warriors IV and Chris Bystrom’s Around the World in 80 Waves (both 1989) through Larry Haynes’s Fluid Combustion series and Bill Ballard’s Insanity and These Are Better Days. Sunny Dayz: A West Side Story (2001) tells how a kid from the back streets of Waianae became world champion.
He was inducted into the Surfing Walk of Fame in 2010, and he has long volunteered with Surfers Healing, which takes children with autism surfing.
