The story

From airs to Code Red

Nathan Fletcher grew up in San Clemente, the younger son of Herbie Fletcher and Dibi Fletcher, Christian’s brother and Walter Hoffman’s grandson. His first board had an Astrodeck pad, and as a teenager he was as at home on a skateboard as on a wave.

He made his name as an aerialist, then turned into one of the most committed big-wave surfers in the world, at Mavericks, Pipeline and Teahupoʻo. His ride on the Code Red swell at Teahupoʻo on August 27, 2011, won Ride of the Year, Monster Tube and Overall Performance at the 2012 Billabong XXL Awards.

On Nalu TV he appears as a kid in Wave Warriors II and grows up through Blistering Hot, Tweak Freaks and Wave Hunters to Spread Your Wings and Musim Ombak.

His story, and his grandfather’s, is told in the documentary Heavy Water (2019).
