The freesurfer who won the Eddie
Bruce Irons was born on November 16, 1979, in Hanalei, Kauai, and grew up surfing the island’s reefs with his older brother, Andy. He became known for wild airs and some of the deepest tubes ever ridden at Pipeline.
In 2001 he beat Kelly Slater to win the Pipe Masters. In December 2004 he won the Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau at Waimea Bay, with a perfect 100 in giant surf, and that year he was also the tour’s Rookie of the Year. His first tour win came at the 2008 Rip Curl Pro Search in Bali.
The films on Nalu TV catch him early, from the Adrenaline Surf Series and Bill Ballard’s Insanity to Larry Haynes’s Kauai Boys On The Edge (1997) with Andy, then Traction, The Bomb and Iratika.
He also surfed in Blue Crush (2002) and starred in The Bruce Movie (2005).
